Boxing Weekly: Chávez Jr. Released, Paul vs Davis Confirmed, Canelo in Camp, and Japan’s Tragedy

Julio César Chávez Jr., son of the Mexican legend, is back in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Deported from the United States and arrested on arrival in Mexico over alleged cartel and drug links, Chávez Jr. has now been released while awaiting trial. As CNN Sports notes, it’s another chapter in a career overshadowed by chaos outside the ring.

Meanwhile, Jake Paul has locked in his latest money-spinner. The YouTuber-turned-fighter will share a ring with Gervonta “Tank” Davis in an exhibition bout in Atlanta on November 14, confirmed by the Associated Press. Paul’s selling it as a test against a pound-for-pound star, while Davis looks ready to pocket a fat cheque and settle a rivalry that’s been bubbling for years.

Heavyweights in Flux: Dubois Splits, Whyte Fights On

Daniel Dubois has split with trainer Don Charles following his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk. At 26, Dubois should be finding his prime, but instead he’s chopping and changing, leaving fans wondering if stability will ever arrive.

Dillian Whyte isn’t going anywhere either. Flattened inside one round by 20-year-old Moses Itauma earlier this month, the veteran heavyweight insists his career’s not over. Fans are split: some respect his grit, others think he’s walking straight into more punishment.

The sanctioning bodies added their own drama. Jaron “Boots” Ennis has been shuffled out of the WBC’s top spot, leaving his route to a title murkier than before. At the same time, Jermell Charlo has teased a “Friends to Foes” fight with Errol Spence, the kind of grudge match that sells itself if it gets over the line.

Canelo Pushing Hard, Japan in Mourning

Canelo Alvarez is pushing the limits in preparation for his September 13 fight with Terence Crawford. Sparring partners include Jaron Ennis and Yoenli Hernandez, proof that Team Canelo is pulling no punches to sharpen the champion against one of the slickest operators in boxing.

But the biggest news this week came with tragedy. In Japan, two fighters, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, died from brain injuries suffered in separate fights on the same card. It’s an unthinkable double loss that has sparked fresh questions about medical safety and whether boxing in Japan can carry on under its current system.

To close on a lighter note, the International Boxing Association marked International Boxing Day in Dengfeng, China, with a flashmob and showcase events. A reminder that boxing still carries joy and reach worldwide, even in a week dominated by scandal and sorrow.

  1. Daniel Dubois changing trainers again? That boy ain’t never gonna learn! You can’t keep switching people around you every time you lose or feel bad, that’s not how champions are made 🙄.

  2. ‘Boots’ Ennis getting dropped from WBC ranking don’t make sense at all man 🤬 That guy fights better than most champions and they still play politics instead of giving good boxers their shot.

  3. Those deaths in Japan are real sad but that’s just part of boxing isn’t it? If you step in the ring you gotta accept what comes with it. Don’t blame the sport for something everybody knows is dangerous.

    • ‘Exactly bro, fighters know what they signin up for. People cryin now like it’s a surprise or something 😤’

  4. Canelo fighting Crawford sounds cool but I don’t believe Canelo can beat someone that fast and slick no matter how hard he trains. Sparring with Ennis don’t mean nothing if your legs are too slow.

    • Nah I disagree, Canelo still got power and experience, that matters more than just speed. Crawford never felt punches like Canelo’s before and that could change everything 💪.

  5. Dillian Whyte needs to quit before he gets hurt bad. It’s clear he can’t win no more, and getting knocked out by a kid just proves it. Boxing ain’t for old guys who can’t take a punch anymore 😕.

  6. Julio César Chávez Jr. always causing problems, and now he got in trouble again? I don’t get why people still talk about him like he’s important. He had chances and messed up every time. Should’ve stayed quiet.

  7. I think Jake Paul fighting Tank Davis is just stupid. He ain’t no real boxer and people only watch him cause he’s famous from the internet. Tank is gonna kill him in there 💀. This fight ain’t fair or serious.
