Diego Pacheco is defending his USWBC and WBO International Super-Middleweight titles against Steven Nelson on Saturday, January 25, at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. Live on DAZN, this fight has everything: rising stars, a stacked undercard, and plenty of action to kick off the year.

Fight Overview: Pacheco vs. Nelson

Diego Pacheco: Ready to Break Through

Diego Pacheco (22-0, 18 KOs) is quickly becoming one of boxing’s must-watch talents. The 23-year-old from Los Angeles is the #1 WBO contender and ranked in the top 5 across multiple sanctioning bodies. Known for his power and precision, Pacheco’s most recent fights showcased his dominance, including a brutal body-shot KO over Maciej Sulecki last August.

Pacheco is confident about his trajectory:
“I’ve been fighting for six years as a pro, and I’m 22-0. I feel like I’m stepping into my prime now. After January 25, I’ll be even closer to fighting for a world title.”

His technique emphasizes sharp, calculated attacks, with a knack for breaking down opponents both mentally and physically. For Pacheco, this fight is not just a title defense—it’s a step closer to a shot at boxing’s biggest names.
“Canelo has most of the belts, and [William] Scull has the other. I’m ready to take on whoever gives me the chance. I think 2025 is my year to fight for a world title.”

Steven Nelson: The Dangerous Challenger

Steven Nelson (18-0, 15 KOs) brings an impressive record and power to this fight. Known for his aggressive style and ability to wear down opponents, Nelson represents a real challenge for Pacheco. The Omaha fighter’s high-pressure style could test Pacheco’s ability to adapt under fire.

Nelson’s undefeated record makes him a threat, and a win here would propel him into the super-middleweight spotlight.

Stacked Undercard

Andy Cruz vs. Omar Salcido

Cuban Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz takes on Omar Salcido in a 10-round Lightweight bout for the IBF International and WBA Continental Latin American titles. Cruz’s speed and technical brilliance will be on display as he continues his transition from amateur to professional success.

Ernesto Mercado vs. Jose Pedraza

Ernesto Mercado makes his Matchroom debut against two-time world champion Jose Pedraza in a 10-round Super-Lightweight clash. Mercado’s aggressive style will meet Pedraza’s veteran experience in what could be a fight-of-the-night contender.

Other Undercard Highlights

  • Leonardo Rubalcava vs. Israel Mercado: Eight-round Super-Lightweight bout.
  • Nishant Dev: Indian Olympian makes his professional debut in Before the Bell action.
  • Zaquin Moses: Unbeaten Lightweight enters his second professional fight.
  • Harley Mederos vs. Arturo de Isla: Mederos looks to impress in his first fight under Matchroom.

Stakes and Implications

For Pacheco, this fight is more than just a title defense. It’s a statement to the division and a step toward a world title shot. With Canelo Alvarez and William Scull holding the belts, a strong performance could put Pacheco in line for a marquee fight later this year.

For Nelson, the stakes are just as high. An upset win would not only solidify his place among the top contenders but also put him in the mix for a world title opportunity.

  1. I think Pacheco is overated. He ain’t fought no real challengers, just some bums. Nelson gonna show him what real boxing is all about. Pacheco will lose his titles and go home crying.

  2. Pacheco has a good record but he ain’t ready for Nelson. Nelson’s aggressive style and experience will make the difference. I believe Pacheco’s confidence is gonna be his downfall in this fight.

  3. I dont understand why people think Pacheco is unstoppable. He hasnt fought anyone realy tough yet, Nelson could be the one to beat him. Just cause he has a good record dont mean he can handle pressure.

  4. Nelson is definitly a strong contender, but Pacheco’s experience might be too much for him. People are underestimating how calculated Pacheco is in the ring, and that might just give him the edge he needs to win.

  5. I can’t wait for this fight! I mean, if Pacheco can punch as hard as he talks, Nelson better bring a helmet! 😂
