Hitchins vs. Kambosos: Title, Ego, and Bad Blood Collide at Madison Square Garden on June 14 Kambosos says he’s not done yet — Hitchins says he never started

By Tim Smith - June 12, 2025 - 12 comments

Richardson Hitchins puts his IBF World Junior-Welterweight title on the line against former unified lightweight king George Kambosos Jr. in the main event at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, June 14, streaming live globally on DAZN (7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT / 12:00 a.m. UK). The bad blood’s real, the venue is historic, and the winner kicks the door open to bigger fights at 140.

This isn’t a solo showcase — Matchroom’s loaded the undercard with world title eliminators, undefeated punchers, and rising international talent. Andy Cruz fights Hironori Mishiro in an IBF lightweight eliminator, while Ernesto Mercado, Alexis Barriere, and Pablo Valdez also feature in career-defining bouts.

Hitchins says it’s levels — Kambosos wants the feeling again

Richardson Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) isn’t shy. “I’m going to beat the shit out of you,” he told Kambosos on Matchroom’s ‘Cards on the Table’. “You can’t outbox me. Your dad knows. Your team knows.” Hitchins dismantled Liam Paro in December and wants the rest of the division to see what’s coming.

Kambosos Jr. (22-3, 10 KOs) isn’t here to play along. “This ain’t about money. I’ve made money,” he snapped back. “This is about proving I’m still that guy.” The Aussie shocked the world at MSG in 2021 when he upset Teofimo Lopez. Now he’s back where it all happened, trying to do it again.

This fight’s about legacy for Kambosos. For Hitchins, it’s about arrival. Both men think the other one’s deluded.

Cruz, Mercado, Barriere lead high-stakes undercard

Andy Cruz (5-0, 2 KOs), the Olympic gold medalist and Cuban standout, faces Japan’s Hironori Mishiro (17-1-1, 6 KOs) in a 12-round IBF lightweight eliminator. A win puts Cruz one step away from a world title. Mishiro’s fighting in the U.S. for the first time — and it’s do-or-die.

Unbeaten puncher Ernesto Mercado (17-0, 16 KOs) is coming off a savage KO of Jose Pedraza and now looks to flatten Jonathan Montrel (19-3, 13 KOs) for the IBF North American and WBC Continental Americas straps. This kid isn’t playing.

Canadian heavyweight Alexis Barriere (12-0, 10 KOs) meets unbeaten Roney Hines (14-0-1, 8 KOs) for the WBC Continental Americas title. If Barriere gets the win, expect a WBC ranking next.
