Mbilli’s moment: WBC interim belt, Sulecki’s fire, and all-Canadian carnage hit Quebec City

Christian Mbilli finally gets his shot. On Friday, June 27, at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, the undefeated slugger headlines a stacked card against Poland’s Maciej Sulecki for the WBC Interim super middleweight title. The fight streams live in the U.S. on ESPN+.

But that’s just the start. Erik Bazinyan and Steven Butler will throw hands in a heated 10-round all-Canadian fight, and heavyweights Arslanbek Makhmudov and Ricardo Brown look set to flatten whatever’s in front of them.

Mbilli gets his shot — and he’s not leaving empty-handed

Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) isn’t just unbeaten — he’s steamrolled nearly everyone in front of him. After flattening Heffron in one and outworking Derevyanchenko across ten, he’s walking into this one ranked No. 1 by the WBC and WBA, and No. 2 by the WBO.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long, I’ve worked so hard to get here,” said Mbilli. “There’s no way I’m leaving without the belt on June 27.”

Sulecki (33-3, 13 KOs) isn’t coming to roll over. He just beat the brakes off Akhmedov in Kazakhstan — and now he’s looking to spoil Mbilli’s coronation.

“This fight is between me and Canelo, so we can square away our beef from sparring,” Sulecki said. “Of course, Christian Mbilli will not be an easy fight… but I will make sure I do my part with a statement in his hometown.”

Bazinyan vs. Butler — something’s gotta give

Erik Bazinyan (32-1-1, 23 KOs) and Steven Butler (33-4-1, 27 KOs) clash in a 10-round super middleweight battle that’s got all the markings of a war. Bazinyan needs to bounce back after drawing with Shakeel Phinn and getting stopped by Jaime Munguia.

Butler, meanwhile, has been here before. Two world title shots, three straight KO wins since. Both are fighting for relevance. One leaves on the comeback trail — the other gets stuck.

Heavyweights, contenders, and local favorites on the hunt

Arslanbek Makhmudov (19-2, 18 KOs) isn’t here to play. He’s rebuilding after a rough loss and faces unbeaten Jamaican Olympian Ricardo Brown (12-0, 11 KOs) in a 10-round clash. This could end quick — both hit like trucks.

Junior lightweight Leïla Beaudoin (12-1, 1 KO) takes on ex-world champ Elhem Mekhaled (17-3, 3 KOs), while 21-year-old knockout machine Jhon Orobio (13-0, 11 KOs) is back to raise hell again.

Also returning: Luis Santana (13-0, 6 KOs) and Wilkens Mathieu (13-0, 9 KOs) — both staying busy, both expected to win, neither looking to play nice.

Top Rank’s Bob Arum is all in on the headliner:
“Christian Mbilli is one of the most exciting fighters in boxing today… This has all the makings of a firefight.”

  1. 😂 Heavyweights hit like trucks? More like hitting like toy cars with those stats!! Who thought this was supposed to be impressive? Bring me real fighters!! This is so comical watching them try!

  2. *sigh* If only boxing was as simple as people make it seem… History shows us that even champions can lose when they underestimate their opponent. This could end badly for Mbilli.

  3. @Stephanie83 you got it wrong!!! Mbilli is gonna smash him for sure!!! The dude is unbeatable right now!! Look at his KO record!!! He’s like a machine!!! Can’t wait for June 27!!! 🥊🔥

    • @Nikki02 I don’t know about smashing… Sulecki has some serious skills too! Let’s not count him out just yet; he can definitely put up a fight!

    • @Nikki02 LOL a machine? More like a punching bag if he gets caught off guard by someone like Sulecki! This fight is way more unpredictable than you think.

  4. I mean, c’mon! Are we really believing that Mbilli will just steamroll over Sulecki? This isn’t a video game; it’s boxing! Anything can happen in the ring, folks!

  5. While I appreciate the excitement around the fight, we should consider Mbilli’s past opponents’ quality. Not all wins are equal, and Sulecki might just surprise everyone! It could be closer than fans think.

    • I totally agree! Sometimes fighters look good on paper but struggle against tough opponents. It’s all about strategy and who can adapt better in the ring.

  6. Honestly, this whole event feels overrated. Mbilli’s opponents haven’t been that impressive, and I doubt he’ll actually face real competition. Just another hype train that won’t deliver anything new or exciting.

  7. I think this is absolutely amazing! Mbilli has really worked hard and deserves this title shot. Can’t wait to see him fight live! I’m sure he will take home the belt. 🥊💪
