Pacquiao vs. Barrios: Can the legend steal history again—or will Barrios bury him in Vegas?

By Tim Smith - June 5, 2025 - 9 comments

Manny Pacquiao comes out of retirement at 45 to fight WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in a 12-round title bout on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight streams live on Prime Video Pay-Per-View at 7:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 a.m. UK (Sunday).

Pacquiao’s Return: One More Shot at Gold

After two years out and just weeks removed from his Hall of Fame induction, Pacquiao returns for one last run at a world title. If he beats Barrios, he becomes the oldest welterweight champion in history—breaking his own record.

His last major win came in 2019 against Keith Thurman. He followed that with a loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021. Since then, he’s stayed quiet—until now.

Mario Barrios: Young, Active, and Ready

Mario Barrios isn’t here for a farewell tour. The 30-year-old champion has a height and reach advantage and enters off a three-fight unbeaten streak. He holds the full WBC welterweight belt, not an interim version, and wants to erase any doubts about his status at the top of the division.

Barrios has dropped Ugas twice, stopped Fabian Maidana, and fought Abel Ramos to a draw. He’s active, applies pressure, and works behind a long jab. His volume could wear Pacquiao down if the veteran’s legs don’t show up.

“Sharing the ring with a legend is an honor,” Barrios said. “But once the bell rings, it’s business.”

What’s on the Line

This fight isn’t just about a belt. It’s about legacy. If Pacquiao wins, it rewrites the record books again. If Barrios wins, it shuts the door on any talk of him being a paper champ and adds a legend to his resume.

  1. ‘Evrybody talkin legacy but dont know history smh 🤦‍♀️ Boxers who came back after retirment mostly lost big! Ali lost! Tyson lost! Time dont wait on nobody…Barrios too much for manny now!

  2. ‘Barrios dun beat ugas twice n made maidana fly — that ain’t luck 😲 Pacquio gone find out quick that comebak fights are diffrnt today than back in his prime years.

  3. @all y’all forgettin one thing: this isn’t just bout belts or age its bout RESPECT ✊ Manny earn the right to go out swingin’ even if it end badly at least he CHOOSE how it end!

  4. ‘Scuse me but this aint Rocky movie 😂 when a man retires its cause time done caught him up! U can’t cheat the clock forever, and Barros gonna show him what TIME looks like when punchin.

  5. I rekon Manny’s still got them trick punches that made other guyz look confuzed! U can’t teach that stuff 😤 Even at 45 he smarter than barrio by mileS. Skill beat age sometime trust me.

  6. PacMan iz not jus doin this for funsies like some peeps say. Is legacy, its heart 💪 even if hes old, who say old men cant box? u watch how he move, angles be cray still.

    • But Lscott u miss point… boxing not just about heart, it bout body too 😓 and his legs might not work same no more. That Barrios boy don’t play soft!

    • No no NO!! If we talk legacy then y risk it all now?? What if he looses big? Then all people member is him fallin down not rising up ☠️

  7. I dont get why evryone is thinkin Pacquiao still gots it. He old now, like real old, and Barrios is young n fresh!🤷‍♀️ He gonna get hurt if he tryna fight like back in 2010s. It aint smart at all. He should stay retirered instead of riskin he’s health for some belt he already had before.
