Super Bantamweights Clash in Title Unification

Ellie Scotney is stepping into her biggest spotlight yet. The undefeated unified super bantamweight champ (10-0) will meet long-reigning WBC titleholder Yamileth Mercado (24-3, 5 KOs) in a 122-pound unification bout on July 11 at Madison Square Garden. The matchup lands on the main card of Taylor vs. Serrano 3, a historic all-women’s event promoted by MVP and streamed globally on Netflix.

Scotney, fresh off a quick climb through the ranks, holds the IBF, WBO, IBO, and Ring titles. She’s currently ranked #1 at super bantamweight by ESPN. Mercado has held her WBC belt since 2019 and defended it eight times. The two top fighters in the division will finally settle it in a 10-rounder on one of the year’s biggest stages.

“This is a massive moment in my career,” Scotney said. “I’m ready to prove I’m number one at 122.”

Taylor vs. Serrano 3 Headlines Historic All-Women’s Card

The night is headlined by the trilogy clash between Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) and Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs), with Taylor’s undisputed super lightweight crown on the line. In the co-main, Alycia Baumgardner (15-1, 7 KOs) will face Spain’s Jennifer Miranda (12-0, 1 KO) for all the belts at 130.

This marks the first all-female pro boxing card at MSG, and every fight on the main card will be either for a unified or undisputed title.

Prelims Feature Title Unifications and Rising Contenders

Thorslund-Metcalf Unify at Bantamweight

In the preliminary headliner, MVP’s undefeated unified bantamweight champ Dina Thorslund (23-0, 9 KOs) will take on IBF titleholder Shurretta Metcalf (14-4-1, 2 KOs). Thorslund—ranked #1 pound-for-pound by BoxRec—is aiming to add a third belt and extend her run of 12 straight world title wins.

Metcalf, a former underground fighter and single mother juggling multiple jobs, won her first world title at MSG last year.

Thibeault Pushes Equality in the Ring

Canadian Olympian Tamm Thibeault (2-0, 1 KO) will meet WBA, WBC, WBO, and IBF’s top middleweight contender Mary Casamassa (6-0, 1 KO) in an 8-rounder. Thibeault competes under men’s rules—three-minute rounds—and is pushing for gender parity in pro boxing.

Casamassa, a quiet-but-dangerous southpaw, enters undefeated and holds the #1 spot in four major sanctioning bodies across 160 and 168 pounds.

MVP Goes All In on Women’s Boxing

The July 11 card features six of BoxRec’s top 15 pound-for-pound women’s fighters, including four in the top 10.

  1. This event is more than just another boxing match; it’s a simbol of progress for women in sports! The fact that there’s a all-female card at MSG shows we’re moving forward! Let’s support these fighters! 💪👊

  2. I don’t get why people is making such a big deal about this match. I mean, boxing is just boxing, no matter if it’s men or women. Scotney ain’t even fought anyone realy tough yet. 🤷‍♂️
